Federal officials are warning military veterans not to give out their credit card numbers or personal information to callers claiming to be updating prescription information for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

The VA issued an advisory this week, after veterans service organizations and medical clinics reported their clients were receiving the phone calls. The callers were telling veterans the information was needed because the VA had a new drug dispensing system, which federal officials said is untrue.

Veterans who receive phone calls from people claiming to be from the VA, or who have questions, should call 877-222-8387.
